AN ARCH BRIDGE WILL IMPROVE THE ECOLOGY & ECONOMY OF SOUTHERN PENINSULAR MALAYSIA

The "arch bridge" proposed to be built on the Malaysian side of the Johor Causeway is important for both the ecology and economy of the southern Peninsular Malaysia.

Since the completion of the Johor Causeway in 1923, the embankment has negatively affected the natural ecology of the Strait of Johor, as it has permanently blocked the natural flow of the sea between the eastern and the western part of the strait. The blockage has caused the artificial accumulation of mud and destroyed the natural ecosystem of the strait that might has led to the extinction of few particular species of marine faunas and floras. The destruction of such ecosystem might has also led to the elimination of some natural beauties along the shore of the strait, where if such natural beauties do exist today, they would have became attractive tourist destinations and contributed to the local economy.

Since the strait is directly connected to the sea area on both the eastern and western part of the southern Peninsular Malaysia, the effect of such might have also affected a greater geographical area of the southern part of the country. Taken the time of almost a century of such major marine blockage, the real negative impact on the ecology is very significant.

Scientific organizations including the departments concerning the marine biology and environmental science should consider to do research on the almost 100 years of such major disturbance of marine ecology to justify this very unfortunate destruction of natural ecosystem.

If an arch bridge is built on the Malaysian side of the Johor Causeway, it will absolutely improve the ecology of the Strait of Johor. The marine water quality and ecosystem will be improved, and the strait will be able to accommodate many more faunas and floras. Not only the number of fishes will accumulate, but species that has extinct may migrate again to the strait.

Good ecology will always lead to good economy, and like ecology, economy is a continuity and such improvement will affect a larger geographical area of southern Peninsular Malaysia, not only along the narrow strait. Please do not have the idea that the Strait of Johor is too narrow to have such a major ecological and economical impact, as even a river will do.

What more, if there is a bridge, there will also be new economic activities that come with the flow of traffic under the bridge; when boats and yachts pass under the bridge. We can look forward for a much beautiful and healthy Strait of Johor with the arch bridge.

This is non-political, but scientific and economics.
